What is Mixing and Mastering?

What is Pre-production?

Essentially, pre-production is a "scratch" or "demo" recording of a song; an audition recording. Recording a song as a demo gives you a chance to see opportunities for changes to make the song stronger. Perhaps a lyric needs adjusting, a guitar lead added here, a drum change-up there... you get it. Investing in pre-pro, or recording a demo yourself, is a great way to audition the songs before you commit to a final recording.

Do I need my demo or pre-pro mixed and mastered?

No, your demo does not "need" to be mixed and mastered. You can try creating your own basic mix but it's up to you. If you are looking to hear a close representation of what you could expect then investing in a basic mix and master may be a good idea. Some studios may offer a discounted rate for a demo mix/master if you ask them.
